How to navigate our way in any novel complex environment is the most important for our everyday life as well as survival，occupying both scientists and philosophers for thousands of years.The 2014 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded one half to John O'Keefe of University College London in UK and the other half to May-Britt Moser and Edvard Moser of Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Norway"for their discoveries of cells that constitute a positioning system in the brain".We highlight the history of study in the brain's spatial navigation system，the discovery of all different functionally specialized spatial cells including place，head-direction，grid and border cells，the current trend in the research field of space memory circuit，the application in translational medicine and information technology as well as the challenge and opportunity during the age of world-wide brain activity plan.
